Battery Passport: Powering India’s EV Future with Transparency

NITI Aayog has initiated consultations with key ministries on developing a Battery Passport Framework, aligning with global norms like the EU Batteries Regulation (2023).

What is a Battery Passport?

  • A digital identity system for batteries — similar to an "Aadhaar for batteries".

  • Embedded as a QR code, it carries comprehensive data including:

    • Origin of materials

    • Chemical composition

    • Performance & usage history

    • Recycling information & end-of-life data

Global Context

  • European Union’s Batteries Regulation (2023) mandates a battery passport for industrial batteries >2kWh by 2026.

  • Aimed at sustainability, accountability, and circularity in battery manufacturing.

Significance for India

  • EV Export Boost: Aligning with global battery norms makes Indian EVs more export-ready.

  • Supply Chain Transparency: Ensures responsible sourcing of raw materials like lithium, cobalt.

  • Safety Standards: Helps trace faulty components in case of fire or failure.

  • Circular Economy: Enables better recycling and reuse of battery components.

  • Data-Driven Governance: Facilitates policy decisions based on real-time battery lifecycle data.

UPSC Prelims MCQ

Q. With reference to the proposed Battery Passport framework, consider the following statements:

  1. It will digitally track the lifecycle of industrial batteries above 2kWh capacity.

  2. It aims to promote circularity and traceability in the EV battery supply chain.

  3. The concept has been implemented by India ahead of the European Union.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

A. 1 and 2 only

B. 2 and 3 only

C. 1 and 3 only

D. 1, 2 and 3

Answer: A. 1 and 2 onlyExplanation:

  • Statement 1 is correct: The framework targets high-capacity industrial batteries.

  • Statement 2 is correct: It promotes supply chain transparency and recycling.

  • Statement 3 is incorrect: The EU implemented it first in 2023.

UPSC Mains Question (GS3 – Environment & Technology)
