The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) has recently established a dedicated unit to audit State-run Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), aiming to improve fiscal oversight at the state level.
About CAG
Constitutional Authority: Appointed under Article 148 of the Constitution by the President of India.
Tenure: 6 years or until the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
Reappointment: Not eligible for reappointment in either Central or State Government.
Removal: Similar to a Supreme Court judge — on proven misbehavior or incapacity by Parliament.
Powers & Functions
Defined under the CAG’s (Duties, Powers and Conditions of Service) Act, 1971.
Post-expenditure audit: CAG’s role begins only after government expenditure has occurred.
