Banarasi Shehnai and Tabla Receive GI Tag Recognition

The Banarasi Shehnai and Banarasi Tabla, two culturally significant musical instruments from Varanasi, have been recently awarded Geographical Indication (GI) certificates. This move officially recognizes their cultural identity and craftsmanship, tying them uniquely to their place of origin.

About Banarasi Shehnai

  • The Shehnai is a traditional Indian wind instrument, acoustically similar to the Western oboe.

  • It features seven holes on its body instead of keys and is known for its melodious, auspicious tone.

  • Strongly linked to temple music traditions in India and played during weddings and religious ceremonies.

  • The instrument achieved global fame through Ustad Bismillah Khan, who elevated the Shehnai to the concert stage, making it a symbol of India’s musical heritage.

About Banarasi Tabla

  • The Benares Tabla Gharana was founded over 200 years ago by Pandit Ram Sahai.

  • Recognized as one of the six main tabla gharanas in Indian classical music, known for its deep, resonant tones and distinct compositions.

  • The style is known for blending rhythmic complexity with aesthetic grace.

  • Padma Vibhushan Pandit Kishan Maharaj, one of the most renowned tabla maestros, belonged to the Banaras Gharana, cementing its legacy in Indian music.

Why GI Tag Matters

  • A Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation due to that origin.

  • GI tags promote local craftsmanship, preserve traditional knowledge, and offer legal protection against unauthorized use or imitation.

  • For UPSC aspirants, understanding GI tags aligns with topics in GS Paper 1 (Art and Culture) and GS Paper 3 (Intellectual Property Rights).
